 UNHCR grants the title of Humanitarian Champion to Juma Al Majid

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has honored Juma Al Majid at a ceremony held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, in Jood Palace Hotel in Dubai, and named him the title of "UNHCR Humanitarian Champion", in recognition of his humanitarian efforts and charitable activities over six decades.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Mr. Amin Awad, director of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Al-Matouq, Advisor to the Emir of Kuwait, Chairman of the International Islamic Charitable Organizations (IICO) and UN Secretary General\'s Humanitarian Envoy. A delegation from (UNHCR), and many of the VIPs also attended.

The ceremony started with Mr. Juma Al Majid, he explained the importance of individuals and the international community to cooperate in responding to some of the big humanitarian crises such as refugees and displaced persons, which affect millions of people, many of them women and children and civilians. He said: ‘We in the United Arab Emirates have learned from our leaders help others, of any gender, color or religion, Humanity bring us together. I appreciate (UNHCR) substantial role in helping refugees and forcibly displaced. It is a pride to me and great honor to be part of this humanitarian task. I hope this event will inspire everyone to offer assistance to others. It is not necessary to be rich to  provide assistance and charity’.

Commenting on the importance of his philanthropic work, Amin Awad stated, "We appreciate Mr. Juma Al Majid\'s ongoing efforts in support of UNHCR\'s humanitarian activities in the Middle East and North Africa."

Juma Al Majid\'s recognition comes as the MENA region witnesses an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, particularly in light of the situations in Syria, Iraq and Yemen which have displaced millions of people.

The Director also added "we look forward to our future engagement and collaboration with Juma Al Majid and his charities in order to provide assistance to the greatest number of persons of concern to UNHCR."

At the end of the ceremony, and on behalf of the High Commissioner for the United Nations for Refugees, Mr. Filippo Grandi, Amin Awad granted the shield of (UNHCR) to Mr. Juma Al Majid.
